On the Cusp of Greatness…

Do you feel like you are on the cusp of greatness? Do you feel like you are almost there, but something feels off? In my business coaching practice I hear clients say:

“I am so close to reaching my goal, but something is missing. I feel like something is still off,”

Whether you are trying to start your own business, lose weight, find your soul mate, or make more money, feeling like you are almost there but not quite is a common situation.

I know this feeling all too well. For the first few years of my business as life coach, speaker, and writer, I struggled with the feeling that I was on the brink of a big breakthrough. I felt as if my success was always just outside my reach.

Although I longed for the big win, the sudden surge of customers, the overnight book sales spike, and millions of followers flocking to my social media sites, the raw reality is, it never happened. That big breakthrough I was always waiting for was just an energetic hold that kept me feeling stuck.

Flash forward to today: I have to catch myself from the energy of “are we there yet?” It’s great to have goals and desires, but when those goals keep us from living in the moment, we prevent ourselves from being fulfilled.

Consider for a moment a goal in your life that has yet to fully manifest. Ask yourself if you feel like you are “almost there”—are you on the cusp of greatness? If so, instead of waiting for your big break, these tips can help:

1. You have already arrived.

What you are going through right now is helping you get to where you want to be.

As you learn new lessons, you become a container to hold and receive your goals fully. If you are focusing on what is missing and what is missing, you could be missing key lessons. Turn your attention to what you are learning and it will help you feel more comfortable in the present.

2. Do the best you can, and that is enough.

I teach college classes at the Art Institute of Portland. And I grade my students based on potential; as long as they are doing the best they can then they know they are doing enough. What’s remarkable about this strategy is the students discover what they are truly capable of. Most of us settle into a routine without ever pushing ourselves to a higher level of greatness. To reach great heights, we have to rise up to meet them. Your best is not comparable to another’s; we must always focus inward on our own skills and capabilities. If you are doing the best you can, then know that is enough. Be honest with yourself: you know when you aren’t showing up fully. Instead of focusing on what isn’t going well and how something still feels off, focus on showing up more fully and doing the best you can.

3. This moment is not forever.

Appreciate the entire journey as a large experiment. Recognize that where you are right now is a special moment because it will never come again. The feelings that you aren’t where you want to be, or sensing something is off are fleeting. So honor the emotions that come up in each moment and trust yourself more fully.

Bonus: Appreciate the moment

The best tip I can offer is to honor the journey by appreciating where you are and what you do have. When you can appreciate what you have instead of wishing for what you don’t have, you will feel more content in the mo moment.

    Shannon,
Your statement in the email about “the cusp of greatness but something is off” where you said “this is a strategy your fear uses to keep you playing small.” was so potent for me. I couldn’t wait for you to expand on this in the full message. But you never mentioned it again. Could you please say more about that?
    Thanks!
