On a scale of one to ten, how happy are you? Do you think you would be happier if things in your life were going a certain way?
Many of us put happiness into experiences outside of ourselves. We say things like, “When I meet my soul mate I will be happy,” “When I leave my soul-sucking job or make more money, I will be happy,” “When I lose the weight I will be happier.” The truth? Happiness won’t come in those external things.
Happiness has to start on the inside first. I know because I spent decades chasing happiness in all the places I thought it lived—a job title, a certain income level, shopping sprees, drugs, alcohol, work, boys who were super wrong for me, and even in a certain body weight—but after all that trying to get happy, I still felt empty and depressed inside. It wasn’t until I peeled back the layers and looked at my core essence that I learned what really happiness is.
Happiness is not a one-size-fits-all deal. What makes you happy is not what will make your significant other or your parents or children happy. But that is the beautiful secret about authentic happiness.
Tweet-able truth: When you strive for your own happiness, you become a shining light for those around you. Click to share.
They will be happy because you are happy. If you find yourself chasing happiness, there are three simple things you can do today to help you get happier faster:
1. Make a Magic List
A magic list is a bucket list with a positive spin. Instead of just adding physical activities like traditional bucket list items, you add life lessons you want to learn. For instance, I want to love my body and accept myself fully. I want to take a year off and travel the globe, I want to meet my soul mate. It is a desire list, but one that pumps you up just to be alive. Make a magic list and start to home in on one or two items to check off. This will instantly make you happier because you are doing what you love and taking steps to achieve fulfillment.
2. Look Forward
Life can become monotonous, and we often get stuck in a routine. If you feel bored, tired, or just frustrated with life, it could because you don’t have anything to look forward to. Looking forward to things in life is one way to bump up your happiness levels. It could be a weekend trip, or family picnic. Maybe it is a girl’s night out or a special play date with your favorite furry fella. Having things to look forward to can keep you motivated to make it through the tough or boring periods of life.
Take action: In the comments below, I’d love to hear what you are looking forward to!
3. Go on a Joy Journey
If you are feeling unhappy, it could be because you aren’t allowing yourself to do what makes you happy. A joy journey is all about connecting with what brings you a lot of joy. Maybe you love to cook—cook more. Do you love nature? Get your tush out in nature and play with the world. Don’t deny yourself the simple pleasures of life. A joy journey is a fun way to add more pleasure into your day.

I am looking forward to our coaching session too:) so excited for you and the new things opening up. Love, Shannon
It’s so important to just do more of the things that make you happy. A few months back I was burnt out and so unhappy, when I listened to one of your videos with a similar message. I took your advice. Writing and being with my dogs makes me happy. So I started writing, and I’m now earning money writing articles as a pet expert. I spent more time doing things like agility with my dogs and at our last competition, my wee dog, Sean, won three rosettes – so proud of him! And I’m now building a website and getting ready to launch my dog blog. I am so HAPPY, thank you Shannon
Spending time with my son, redesign of my blog, starting a live streaming-radio, meeting new people, traveling, fall in love(hahah), reading your books, be a good father…that all makes me happy. Andtaht’s just a start.
Thank you Shannon for be with us!
