Is your morning routine making you unhappy?
Do you wake up in the morning and feel happy and ready to live an awesome new day? Or do you grudgingly push snooze, run through the list of all the things you have to do and mentally beat yourself up for all of yesterday’s unmet expectations?
That was me for several years. I hated waking up. It meant going to a job I felt disconnected from and suffering through yet another monotonous day full of self-doubt and fear.
Today my life is much different. I have a morning practice that fills my soul and connects me to my best self. If you want to be happier and healthier it could be as simple as shifting your morning routine.
In today’s video, I share three morning tricks you can try that will make you happier. Some of the happiest and healthiest people have a morning routine that helps them stay happy and healthy.
I’ve made huge strides to overcome depression and become a happy person. But it wasn’t an overnight fix. I started by looking at my routine and shifting my morning habits. Here are three simple things I do every morning for ultimate happiness.
1. Befriend Your Inner Critic
Our inner critic will run rampant if we don’t address it. From the moment you wake up, instead of letting that negative voice creep in, quickly say positive thoughts to yourself about yourself and your day. Every morning when I wake up, before my eyes even open, I say to myself, “You are loved. You are beautiful. You are going to have a great day.” I hold this vibration and intention for at least a minute and it helps me wake up feeling unconditional love and excitement for my day. When you can address your inner critic, it no longer will run amok.
2. Question Yourself
Each morning, I ask myself the same thing Steve Jobs did. “If today is your last day alive, would you want to be doing what you are doing?” If my answer is no, I adjust. I also wake up asking myself key questions, like what can I do today that my future self will hug me for? Asking yourself key questions each morning will help you align to your truth.
My new book Find Your Happy Daily Mantras asks daily questions to help you align with your own happiness. Check it out if you want to go deeper with this practice.
3. Gratitude the Attitude
From the moment I wake up, I run through all of the things I see and feel that I am thankful for. I hug my furry guy Tucker and say I love you to him. I say I love you to myself and to my higher power, God and my angel guides. I realized along the way that the best way to get more of what you want is to be thankful for what you have. I choose gratitude not to get more, but to truly celebrate all that is great in the moment. To be super happy, practice being thankful for what is going well in your life.
What happiness tricks do you do in the morning? I’d love to hear from you in the comments below.
Great ideas Shannon! I have been making an effort to say thank you every morning. It makes a difference!
Shannon,
I want to thank you for your awesome video’s and writings. You have been such an inspiration to me and I am thankful that you reach out and share your joy with the world!
All the best,
Mari-Ellen
My therapist gave me the idea of writing myself little permission slips to start off my day. They can be as simple as giving myself permission to get angry over something little or as complex as giving myself permission to handle a situation in a certain way. I take a quick look at the things I have to do for the day, look at how I’ve handled similar situations in the past and write out my permission slip to handle things in a new way instead of acting from my fearful past. I’ve been doing this for a couple of weeks now and I’ve had a huge life altering shift. Between my morning permission slips and my bedtime gratitude/acknowledgement journal I’ve got some pretty powerful actions steps to shift my awareness. These little practices are helping me transform my life from one of mind/ego based living to heart-based living. What a difference!
My friend shared this site on FB & I am grateful for the opportunity to finally read “refreshing & simplistic ways to engage on MY ROAD to happiness.” While many speak on it, I failed to ASK THE IMPORTANT question/ignorance of knowing how to now embark on my choice. This site has been very helpful. Thank you.. Nick@nite
Yes, I enjoy this sight very much, thank you for all your effort and great thoughts.
