Several years ago, I was stuck in a soul-suffocating career and felt hopeless and passionless. I lacked clarity and had no idea what my calling was. Looking back, I can see that I focused so much attention on trying to find my life purpose, I was actually preventing myself from finding it sooner. By focusing on how I didn’t know what I wanted, I was stuck in lack and self-doubt. It wasn’t until I shifted my attention to focus on living a life with more meaning than things radically changed for me.
Today I share surprising truths about finding your life purpose. If you are struggling to know what your calling is, or you feel unclear about what your next step should be, these truths will help:
How to reach your calling and step into your dream life.
1. You don’t find your life purpose—you reveal it.
The reason we struggle to find our life passion and purpose is that we are searching outside of ourselves. We look at others and try to figure out what to do, but your life purpose and calling is not something outside of you. You don’t actually find it—you reveal it. It is already within you, your life purpose. Instead of trying to find it, look inward. The thing that makes you feel alive and connected to yourself is already within you. Ask yourself, what did you love to do when you were a child? I loved to write, and I returned to my true joy and followed the clues. Instead of saying, “I am trying to find my life purpose,” simply shift your focus and say, “I am going to reveal the real me.”
2. Everything is connected.
Everything you are going through in your life is part of a bigger plan. What you are going through right now is part of your next phase. For example, I was in a career in advertising. I didn’t know at the time, but being in advertising was great training for me to eventually run my own useless as an author, travel writer, and life coach. I learned instrumental tools in marketing and sharing your message with people. Looking back, that phase was like boot camp for my life calling. So if you are going through something that feels like it isn’t your calling, recognize that it is all connected and you are in training. The skills you are learning are key to the next phase. Everything you are going through is part of a bigger plan.
3. The purpose of your life is to live more on purpose.
When I was trapped in my depression right after I left my corporate job in advertising, I wondered what I was going to do with my life. I had no idea what my purpose was, and this kept me stuck. It wasn’t until I reframed my focus and instead of asking, “What is my life purpose?” I started to say, “How can I live more on purpose?” This radically changed my focus and helped me discover my true joy in writing and helping others find lasting fulfillment. The more you focus on living on purpose, the more you will feel connected to your best self.
I hope these tips helped today. I’d love to hear in the comments which step you will take today to live more on purpose.
