It was nine years ago that my life changed forever . . .
It was 2009 and my life looked and felt completely different than it does today. I walked into my doctor’s office with a calendar. I had been tracking my days, and for the past three months I put a smiley face on any day I made it through without crying. And a sad face for the days my anxiety took over and I cried myself to sleep. In the span of 90 days, there were only four smiley faces. After running some tests, my doctor diagnosed me with clinical depression. I went home that night and like so many nights before, I cried on the bathroom floor. Only this night was different. Choking on my tears, I said, “I can’t do this anymore. It is exhausting to try to be someone I am not.” And in that moment the air around me thinned out and I felt a loving presence wash over me. My inner voice said, “Shannon, follow your heart.”
Every day since that bathroom breakdown, I have done just that. By connecting with the guidance from my true self, the love in my heart, I left the soul-suffocating corporate job in advertising, and the eating disorders, my drug addictions, my toxic relationships and moved across the country to follow my heart to become a writer, coach and speaker.
Today almost a decade later, I am writing you from my home office as I get ready to leave for Canada to lead my annual sold-out Self-Love Retreat. Immediately after, I fly to Asia to finish my book and help rescue golden retriever dogs. To think I could have stayed stuck and trapped in my own unhappiness, but I made a choice. I invested in myself and trusted my inner voice, and that changed everything because today I get to do what I love from anywhere in the world and I am connected to my purpose. (And my calendar these days is all smiley faces. ? )
